FRESHMAN ORIENTATION

How To Stay Out Of Trouble!

A lot of Adsense users have deep fears that they will lose their Adsense accounts if they do something wrong. Their fears aren't entirely unfounded either. Many people have reported that their Adsense accounts have been suspended indefinitely for a variety of reasons.

Is there anything you can do? Fortunately there is! If you follow a few simple rules you should be able to sleep easily at night knowing that your Adsense account is safe.

Are you under 18?

Before you even open an Adsense account you have to make sure you are at least 18 years old. If you're not, Google says you're not allowed to open an account. We believe this is because minors can't legally enter a binding contract… in this case Google's Terms and Conditions.

Thankfully there is a way around this. If you're under 18 you can have an adult sign up for you. They will receive a check in the mail every month in their name. We're not exactly sure how you would handle taxes in this case, so you might want to consult an accountant about this.

Don't click on your ads!

The main reason why most people are kicked out of the Adsense program is because they click on their own Adsense ads.

The good news is this is something that is entirely preventable!

Just make sure you don't, for any reason at all, click on your own ads! Ever! Got it?

We understand that sometimes your cursor slips and you click on your ads by mistake… and thankfully Google understands too! If you ever make the mistake of clicking on your own ads, email them immediately and explain your mistake. Just let them know that it was a mistake and you won't do it ever again. You can email them directly at: adsense-support@google.com

Don't ask people to click on your ads!

The second most common reason for getting booted from Adsense is asking other people to click on their own ads.

You can't ask people to click on your ads for any reason. Don't make the mistake of asking your visitors to "support" your site by clicking on your Adsense ads.

Don't worry… if people are interested in the ads, they'll click on them! There is no need to ask people directly.

You also can't include incentives of any kind for users to click on ads. For example, you can't say "If you click on the Adsense ad you'll receive a prize."

Don't label your ads!

Making this mistake probably won't get your kicked out of Google, but you will at least get a warning. So why even risk making this mistake?

A lot of people like to "label" their ads by putting some text above Adsense. For example, a common thing we see above ads is something along the lines of "Great Products" or "Related Services".

The only text you're allowed to put above the ads is "Sponsored Links" or "Advertisements." Some legitimate web sites label their ads with "Marketplace", but you must get permission to do this.

Don't use competitor's ads!

Google doesn't permit Adsense ads to be published on web pages that also contain what could be considered competing ads or services.

If you have elected to receive contextually-targeted Google ads, this would include all other contextually-targeted ads or links on the same page as Google ads. This would also include ads throughout the site that mimic Google ads or otherwise appear to be associated with Google on your site.

Although you may sell ads directly on your site, it is your responsibility to ensure these ads do not mimic Google ads.

Be careful of your ad placement!

There are certain rules you have to follow when it comes to how you place the ads on your pages. Here is a complete list of those rules…

  • No more than three ad units may be displayed on each web page.
  • A maximum of two Google Adsense for search boxes may be placed on a page.
  • A single link unit may be placed on each Web site page, in addition to the ad units and search boxes specified above. Link units are considered to be 'Google ads' for purposes of these program policies.
  • No Google ad may be placed on any non-content-based pages. This includes error, login, registration, "thank you" or welcome pages.
  • No Google ad or Google search box may be displayed on any domain parking websites, pop-ups, pop-unders, or in any email.
  • No Google ad may be placed on pages published specifically for the purpose of showing ads, whether or not the page content is relevant.
  • Elements on a page must not obscure any portion of the ads, and the ad colors must be such that any ad elements, including text and URL, are visible.
  • clicks on Google ads must not result in a new browser window being launched.

Don't mess with the code!

Any Adsense ad code or search box code must be pasted directly into Web pages without modification. Adsense participants are not allowed to alter any portion of the ad code or change the layout, behavior, or delivery of ads for any reason.

Don't use copyrighted material!

In order to avoid associations with copyright claims, website publishers may not display Google ads on web pages with MP3, Video, News Groups, and Image Results.

Don't use prohibited content!

There are certain types of content that isn't allowed in the Adsense network. Make sure your web sites don't include:

  • Excessive profanity
  • Violence, racial intolerance, or advocate against any individual, group, or organization
  • Hacking/cracking content
  • Illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia
  • Pornography, adult, or mature content
  • Gambling or casino-related content
  • Excessive advertising
  • Any other content that promotes illegal activity or infringes on the legal rights of others
  • Pop-ups, pop-unders or exit windows that interfere with site navigation, obscure Google ads, change user preferences, or are for downloads. Other types of pop-ups, pop-unders, or exit windows may be allowed, provided that they do not exceed a combined total of 5 per user session
  • Excessive, repetitive, or irrelevant keywords in the content or code of web pages
  • Deceptive or manipulative content or construction to improve your site's search engine ranking, e.g., your site's PageRank
  • Incentives (monetary or point-based) to users to click on links or ads while visiting a site containing Ads
  • Sales or promotion of certain weapons, such as firearms, ammunition, balisongs, butterfly knives, and brass knuckles
  • Sales or promotion of beer or hard alcohol
  • Sales or promotion of tobacco or tobacco-related products
  • Sales or promotion of prescription drugs
  • Sales or promotion of products that are replicas or imitations of designer goods

Make sure you follow Google's guidelines!

In addition to the standards above, Adsense participants are required to adhere to the webmaster guidelines posted at http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html. Some relevant items from the guidelines are included below for your reference:

  • Do not load pages with irrelevant or excessive key words.
  • Do not employ cloaking or sneaky redirects.
  • Do not create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
  • Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
  • Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100).
  • Do not participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your website may be affected adversely by those links.
