The Theory
Does Adsense consider keywords in the
domain name when figuring out what your
page is about? Our theory is that it does
play at least a small roll in making the
ads more targeted.
The Test
We tested this theory by purchasing a
new domain name. The domain name had a
keyword in it followed by random numbers.
For example, the keyword was "Education"
so the domain name might be
www.Education1234.com.
Why do we add numbers to the end of the
domain name? We did this because we
obviously couldn't get "Education.com"
since someone else already registered it.
We added numbers at the end because we
know that numbers shouldn't affect the ad.
If we had gone with "EducationWebSite.com"
the ads could have been about "web
sites".
The only thing on the web site was the
Adsense ad. There were no other words in
the HTML. The title of web page was left
blank. The only keyword on this entire web
site could be found in the domain name of
the web site.
The Results
We figured one of two things could
happen. Either the ads would be about
"Education" or there would just be PSA
ads.
As soon as we uploaded the ads, they
were immediately targeted to the correct
keyword! The education domain name had
education-related ads.
We believe this proves beyond a doubt
that having keywords in your domain name
will help you target your ads better.
The Lesson
Be careful when it comes to what words
you include in your domain name. If you
had the domain name "EducationGateway.com"
you might not only find ads relating
education, but also ads relating to
Gateway Computers!
