The Theory
Can you influence the targeting of the
Adsense Ads by putting keywords in your
meta tags? A lot of people believe this is
true. Our theory is that it doesn't affect
the Adsense ads because if it did, it
could be easily exploited.
The Test
We tested this theory by purchasing a
new domain name. The domain name did not
contain any keywords. The domain name was
made up entirely of random numbers (ie
18416923.com)
The reason why the domain name only had
numbers in it is because we didn't want
keywords in the domain name that might
influence the Adsense ads.
We then uploaded a page that didn't
have any content. It also didn't have a
Title. The only thing on the page was the
Adsense ad and a meta tag.
We ran three tests. One test was a page
that contained both a Description and a
Keyword meta tag. Another test was a page
that contained only a Description tag. The
last test was a page that only contained a
Keyword tag.
The Results
All three tests had the same
results
PSA ads.
This means Google couldn't figure out
what the theme of the site was. This was
because the only keywords on the
page were in the meta tags. Therefore,
it's safe to assume that meta tags do not
influence the ads.
We stated that we thought meta tags
weren't considered because they could
easily be exploited. We say that because
if Google used the keywords from the meta
tags and not the keywords from the
content, your site could contain
information about a low paying topic but
you could have high paying ads by using
completely different keywords in the meta
tags.
The Lesson
Use meta tags if you think they help
you rank better in the search
engines
but don't expect your meta
tags to have any affect on the targeting
of your Adsense ads.
