SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Does the Adsense Spider Help Index Your Site?

The Theory

Some people say that having Adsense ads on your web site has the added benefit of getting your site indexed quickly by Google. They say this because, when you put Adsense on your web site, Google sends a bot to your pages.

The Test

We tested this theory by purchasing a new domain name. The domain name has never been promoted. It has no inbound links. The site will not be promoted at all during this test.

We left this web site up for exactly one month to see if Google would index it.

The Results

Almost immediately, Google sent a bot called Mediapartners to this new web site. No other bots came to the web site.

The web site was not indexed by Google or any other search engine. Therefore we believe that having Adsense on your web site will not help you get indexed by Google.

The Lesson

Google uses two bots. One is called Googlebot and the other one is called Mediapartners. The first bot's purpose is to index web sites. The second bot is only used to figure out what your web site is about so it can make the ads more targeted. Just because the Mediapartners bot comes to your web site doesn't mean it will get indexed. Your web site can only be indexed by Googlebot bot.
